Create Own Backgrounds and Embellishments ~ Smile ~ 12x12 Scrapbook Layout TUTORIAL

Hi Crafty Creative People!

i have a step by step tutorial for you today here on how to create custom backgrounds to suit your project, make DIY embellishments and use them on a 12x12 layout.

I have chosen the Spray Ink colours to match the Cocoa Vanilla "Free Spirit" collection leftovers that i have

i have taken a piece of vellum and some Shimmerz sprays (list of "ingredients" for this project is at the end of this post)

i have sprayed a few areas with different colours to get the look i wanted.

i've watched a YouTube Tutorial by Missy Whidden showing how to create background on vellum (except i didn't cover it with white first). Here is a link to her video

* vellum will curl once it gets moisture on it - it helps if you tape it down to your desk surface first.
* use a hair dryer or heat tool to dry the ink slightly before applying different colours to help them not mix as much together
* for more intense colour add a couple of layers of ink, but dry between applications.

vellum will get distorted and will get lots of bumps and creases - this gives it an interesting texture, but if you are after a flat look, unfortunately you won't be able to straighten it.

 Second background!

Repeat the above process on a piece of White cardstock. I have sprayed it lightly with water first to help colours blend together a bit easier and not soak into the paper straight away.

Make sure both paper and vellum are completely dry before proceeding to the next step of cutting out shapes from them, otherwise dies and punches will chew the paper.

Once all was dry, i have taken some paper punches and some dies and cut out a few shapes that i think i might use.

I have also punched out shapes from while cardstock and white Canvas Paper (which i found at a local craft store) - for delicate shapes make sure you use thick and heavy duty cardstock, otherwise your shapes might tear.

I have added a few other things from left overs from my stash eg text prima packaging which i have used to back the film strip diecut with.

I have die cut words Love and Smile a few times from a strip of Canvas paper and have also kept the negatives which i can use in a future project.

I have prepped a white cardstock with some more of the Shimmerz inks in same colours as previously and used packaging technique to add colour to background, then added some splatters.

I have backed the White Background cardstock with some paper from Maggie Holmes "Shine" Paper pad but only on left side and bottom of the page.

Added some clusters of paper which are a combination of Shine and Fancy Free collections and fussy cut some florals from Shine paper.

After picking out die cut embellishments i have made, i have clustered and layered them in 3 areas on the page to create a 'visual triangle'

I have used all of the Love and Smile words i have die cut and layered them next to photo cluster and lower right embellishment cluster - it is a tone on tone look having white on white but it adds suble texture and interest to the page.

Finally i have added my Title "Smile" with some old American Crafts Thickers and Voila! the page is complete.

List of Ingredients:
* Shimmerz sprays :
Vibez - Sunset Strip, Grape Escape
Spritz - Bed of Roses (my favourite!), Sapphire
* White cardstock and canvas paper
* Glue
* Scrap piece of vellum
* Diecutting machine or punches or both
* Maggie Holmes "Shine" papers
* Cocoa Vanilla "Free Spirit" papers

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and if you have any questions, leave me a comment!

Prima Design Team Call - a selection of Past Projects

Prima Design Team Call

Here are some samples of my work with Prima Products over the past few years. I also create a lot of Traditional Scrapbook pages, which i have not included in this post as i have not taken photos of them and they are in storage at the moment.

Hope you like it!

1) - Match box drawers set (idea from a channel on YouTube)
used some prima papers and flowers. (i keep little bits and pieces in it, so it's not purely decorative :) )

2) Clock
I have purchased a basic clock from a shop and altered it to become "pretty". I have used a Prima paper for background and have Gesso'd the outer edge which i have then used mists on to colour the clock and add some sparkle to it. I have decorated it with a variety of embellishments including prima flowers, butterfly, wooden buttons and resin birds. I have also added some pearls and shipboard shapes that i have embossed and coloured to match.

3) Fairy Wishing Well
One of my all time favourites! I have used a lot of prima flowers to make it look a bit like a fairy garden.

4) Time Canvas
another one of my favourites. This includes a lot of mixed media with inks, mists, texture paste and other "textures", such as cheese cloth. Includes a lot of prima flowers and wooden doors as well as a lot of chipboard embellishments that have been embossed and coloured to match.

5) Coasters
Used one of my all time favourite Prima collections - "Firefly" (i'm hoarding it a bit) - and now it is permanently on display in the house on the coasters that everyone looks at and uses and admires :)

6) Key Canvas
I have used an idea from a canvas online that used a lot of keys. So i have taken a selection of real keys, other metal embellishment keys and wooden keys and used them all on this canvas. I have used some Prima Resin embellishments as centre-piece. I have then gesso's over the whole thing and coloured it with Lumier paints. In real life it is gorgeous and very shiny!

7) Large Drawer Set
I have used prima papers to decorate the whole drawer. I have used some inks, texture paste and paint to add a bit of mixed media to the project. My favourite part is the top of the drawers where i have created a bit of a "fairy" scene using some prima flowers, pearls and other bits and pieces and a miniature Fairy i have received as a present. I have added some glitter glue to the fairy to jazz her up a bit :)

8) Photo stand
A little project i have created for my partner to have something nice to look at on his work desk :) I have used some of my favourite papers from Sunrise Sunset collection and a mixture of flowers. I have also added some Wooden Doors and Resin Birds and a few other things including the awesome large light bulb with sentiments on them, which i love!

March Challenge ~ Stuck Sketches ~ "Meow" 12x12 Layout

Hi All!!

Happy Easter and hope you had a wonderful Scrappy Long Weekend.

i have a layout here today i have completed for a challenge over on Stuck Sketches. Here is a link to a sketch challenge

and here is the sketch that i have been working with:

I was really inspired by the circle elements and the tag in the sketch. Although i only had 1 photo, i have taken 2 tags and layered them on either side of photo to achieve a similar look.

I have added some thread with a peg in the right bottom corner of the photo strip and some circle element at the top left. I have torn the bottom edge of the photo strip instead of using a scallop - i just liked the casual look that it added added and instead of using a middle pattern paper piece like the sketch called for, i decided to make my own background! I used Gelatos and the "packaging technique" to add colour to the background and then did some stamping with various shapes and black Stazon ink.

I have also done some hand-stitching on the tags to add a bit of colour to them and some "different" texture.

Hope you like it!

Have a nice scrappy day!

12x12 Scrapbook Layout Tutorial "Teddy Love"

Hi Crafty People!

I have a new layout to share with you today. This was created for Hip Kit Club Design Team Audition.

Here i am working with an old kit i have had in my stash for a very long time.

First i have taken a Red pattern paper for background and layered white and grey A4 size cardstock in the centre to tone down the busy background a bit

I have created some paper layers behind my photo and positioned the photo in the left third of the page to draw the eye.

I have punched out some hears from blue/ aqua pattern papers from 6x6 paper pad with my EK success "Classic Heart" punch and sewn with my sewing machine through the centre of them

Have added some embellishments and white thread, which i have attached with white glue that dries clear using my precision tip bottle for precise application (and less mess!)

Added some enamel dots in the centre of hearts for extra dimension on the page and lifted off the sides of the hearts to raise them up a bit

Then i have done some zig-zag machine stitching below the photo for more "texture" on the page

Using a template from Amy Tan, i have poked holes and hand-stitched "Love" on the page and added letter stickers to complete my title "Teddy Love"

If you have any questions about products or techniques i have used on the page, leave me a comment.
